On December 1, 1948, President José Figueres Ferrer abolished the nation’s army, making Costa Rica the first country to constitutionally eradicate its military.

In 1987 the current president of Costa Rica, Óscar Rafael de Jesús Arias Sánchez won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end civil wars between other Central American countries.

“Paisa”, the frequently applied nickname used by Ticos to refer to people from the neighboring nation of Nicaragua, is also used by Nicaraguans to refer to Costa Ricans. The word derives from the Spanish word “pais” (country), and is used throughout many Latin American countries to refer to citizens from any immediately neighboring countries.
“Paisa”, sobrenombre utilizado muy a menudo por los Ticos para referirse a las personas de la nación vecina, Nicaragua; también es utilizado por los nicaragüenses para referirse a los costarricenses. La palabra deriva de la palabra “país” y se utiliza en muchos países de América latina para referirse a ciudadanos de países vecinos.
Covering an area of more than 10,000 square kilometers and hosting a population of around 270,000, Guanacaste is the most sparsely populated province in all of Costa Rica and is visited by more than one-third of all visitors to Costa Rica.
Guanacaste es la provincia con mayor expansión territorial y menor población en todo Costa Rica, cubre un área de más de 10.000 kilómetros cuadrados con una población de alrededor de 270.000, y es visitado por más de el 33% de los turistas extranjeros.
Approved by the Costa Rica Congress (Asamblea Nacional) in August 2009 in an effort to control the negative effects of absorbing foreigners into the social system of CR without adequate compensation, the new immigration law took effect on March 1st, 2010. Among the sterner rhetoric, the following is a short list of some of the major changes that affect non-permanent residency:
Pensionado – proof that you earn at least $1000 per month from a pension fund or retirement (up from $600).
Rentista – Those with no retirement income must prove that they have a monthly income of at least $2500 (up from $1000)
Inversionista – proof of an investment in a Costa Rican business or in certain government sectors in the amount of at least $200,000
Representante – new requirements for directors, managers, executives, etc. of a Costa Rican business in addition to proof of income 25% more than the CR minimum wage for the position.
“La Caja” – all applicants for non-permanent and permanent residency must pay into the Costa Rica’s national medical system.
Marriage – applications for spouses will not be accepted within the first 2 years of the marriage and new requirements proving the relationship have been put in place.
Higher application fees
Aprobado por la Asamblea Nacional en agosto de 2009 por el fin de proteger recursos costarricenses de la absorción de los extranjeros en el sistema social sin una compensación adecuada, la nueva ley de inmigración entró en vigor el 01 de marzo 2010. Entre la retórica más dura, la siguiente es una breve lista de algunos de los cambios importantes que afectan a la residencia no permanente:
Pensionado – probar que se gana por lo menos
$1000 por mes de un fondo de pensiones (antes era $600).
Rentista – Aquellos que no tienen ingresos de pensiones, deben demostrar que tienen un ingreso mensual de por lo menos $ 2500 (antes era $ 1000)
Inversionista – la prueba de una inversión en un negocio costarricense o en ciertas sectores gobiernos por un cantidad de al menos 200.000 dólares
Representante – nuevos requisitos para los directores, gerentes y ejecutivos de una empresa de Costa Rica, además de un comprobante de ingresos 25% más que el salario mínimo de CR para el puesto.
“La Caja” – todos los solicitantes para la residencia permanente y no permanente, deberán contribuir al sistema nacional de médicos de Costa Rica.
El matrimonio – las solicitudes de los cónyuges no se aceptarán hasta después de 2 años de matrimonio y las nuevas necesidades que justifiquen la relación se han puesto en su lugar.

During this period, Costa Rica took 13th place, contributing 1.52% of the world’s production of green coffee. However, concerning these same exporting countries with the highest per capita consumption, Costa Rica took 2nd place with an average of 4.21 kg consumed per person per year following Brazil’s 5.29 kg per person per year.

The word “Tico” which Costa Ricans use to refer to themselves derives from the linguistically unique local tendency to change the diminutive suffix of words to “tico” (masculine) or “tica” (feminine) such as “momentico” rather than “momentito”.
La palabra “Tico” utilizada por los costarricenses para referirse a ellos mismo se deriva de la tendencia lingüística de cambiar los sufijos diminutivos de las palabras a “tico” (masculino) o “tica” (femenina) como por ejemplo “momentico” en vez de “momentito”.
